HONOLULU -- A student from Maryknoll School is heading to Los Angeles Wednesday for a shot at stardom on "American Idol." On Tuesday, her school wished her good luck in a big way.Jasmine Trias is a senior at Maryknoll School. She's also headed to Hollywood to sing as a contestant on "American Idol."The student body of 1,400 gathered to wish her good luck. In a way it seemed as though she already won the contest.
"This surprised me, actually. I thought it was just going to be like a ceremony to say 'bye,' blessing and everything, but, you know, everybody had signs. Everybody had signs, and leis and gifts and so it's very sweet and I'm so happy," Trias said. It's also a happy day for Jasmine's longtime vocal coach."She really deserves this. She really worked hard for this and I know where she started and the outcome of this at the end," voice coach William Daquioag said.Tuesday's ceremony was also a chance to show Trias as a 17-year-old high school senior with brains to go with that talent:"She's obviously an outstandingly talented young woman, but in addition to that she's an honor student. She would have been inducted into our National Honor Society this Friday night," Maryknoll School president Michael Baker said."I got inducted already, like, individually. The induction ceremony is for everybody. It's, like, the formal thing, but I just got inducted, like, informally,"There was one formality Tuesday: no singing. She has to save that for the show."I will make you proud," Trias said to the cheering crowd. Two other Hawaii contestants made it to the semi-finals. Jonah Moananu performs Tuesday night. Camile Velasco made the cut and is one of the 12 final contestants.Trias is scheduled to perform on March 2.
